The CLÁR bilingual signage scheme, which offers funding towards the erection of bilingual signage has recently been redeveloped by the Department of Community, Equality, & Gaeltacht Affairs. The scheme is now administered locally by Leitrim Development Company in conjunction with Leitrim County Council.

Small business or community organisations who have been planning to update their building façade with a new sign can now avail of grant aid should they consider producing their sign bilingually. Communities who are considering introducing placename and townland signage in their parish or area can also avail of this scheme.

For Private Businesses a grant of 50% is available, to a maximum of €1,000 for the redevelopment of shop front and business signs. Community organisations can avail of grant aid of 50%, to a maximum of €2,000 for both signage and stone townland signs. To qualify for the grants, approval must be obtained in advance of work taking place and equal prominence must be given to both languages.

Details and application packs are available from James Duffy, Sustainable Development Officer, Leitrim Development Company at 071 - 9641770 or james@ldco.ie. For advice and assistance in relation to Irish wording contact Seán O'Suilleabháin, Oifigeach Gaeilge, Leitrim County Council at 071 - 9645582 or sosuilleabhain@leitrimcoco.ie.
