Leitrim Development Company manages two Local Training Initiatives in County Leitrim:
1. Horticulture with Eco-Tourism
About the Course
This is a full-time course in Horticulture (with Eco-Tourism) located in Lough Allen Centre, Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. The course will run for 34 weeks and participants will gain a Major Award at QQI Level 4 upon successful completion. The course is a SOLAS funded Local Training Initiative managed by Leitrim Development Company.
Who is the course for?
The course is for unemployed people and is ideally suited to individuals who are considering embarking on a career in horticulture and wish to obtain a recognised qualification.
Modules include:
- Communications
- Establishing Ornamental Flowering Plants
- Growing Fruit
- Growing Vegetables
- Horticultural Tools and Equipment
- Work Experience
- Safe Horticultural Practice
- Plan Identification, Care and Maintenance
Learning Outcomes
- Identify and care for a range of common plants to include trees, shrubs, vegetables, fruit and bedding plant.
- Carry out horticultural duties and tasks in a safe manner to include handling and use of tools and equipment, hazard identification, use and disposal of pesticides in compliance with relevant codes of practice.
- Use a range of tools and equipment to carry out horticultural tasks and construct landscape features using a variety of materials under supervision.
- Apply a range of techniques to propagate and grow plants and demonstrate a basic knowledge of the underpinning scientific principles associated with plant propagation and horticultural practices.
- Demonstrate a specified range of knowledge, skills and competence, determined by the elective module choices made by learners, as required for their chosen career paths.
- Demonstrate specified theoretical knowledge and specified cognitive and practical skills related to an identified horticulture sector selected as their chosen career path.
- Display an ability to communicate and interact positively and effectively in the managed learning environment and/or the learner’s individual work experience situation.

2. Hospitality Operations
The Hospitality Operations course is a full-time QQI Level 5 major award which is designed to prepare individuals for the Hotel and Catering Industry. The course is run over 42 weeks and is based in The Food Hub in Drumshanbo. The project is funded by Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim ETB and the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, with Leitrim Development Company providing the management and administration of same.
